You know that thing..

That you do when you’re knitting, and something is obviously too big, and you just pretend it’s not?

Yeah, I did that last night. I nearly finished the entire palm of these fingerless gloves that I am making, but I have to rip the whole thing out. Why? Simple self delusion. I should’ve gone down a needle size, and I did not. I don’t know why I knitted blithely on, expecting that somehow things would just resolve themselves. They never actually do that, but the cloud of self-delusion can be kindof enjoyable, and I wasn’t ready to hop off my crazy train at the time. They were a little big for me, and the intended recipient has hands that are smaller than mine, like most women, to be fair. (My hands are many things. Strong, useful, with excellent fine motor skills, but dainty they  sure as hell ain’t.) SO I just kept going, ignoring the sensible Lolly voice in my mind that kept saying things like “Hmmmm, that looks a tad too big..” and “Doesn’t Natalie have smaller hands than you?” and “Perhaps you shouldn’t keep going if you’re unsure about sizing.” I think my sensible internal voice must just be too polite. If she’d said something like “LISTEN HERE YOU CRAZY *****, THOSE GLOVES ARE TOO BIG AND YOU ARE BEING A GREAT BIG DELUSIONAL IDIOT.” I probably would have listened. In all fairness though, MadelineTosh yarn is reeeeally addictive and beautiful.

So now, I’m off to unravel them back to the cuff, and start again with even SMALLER needles. Yay >.< ripripriprip.

  1. I have a problem with delusion knitting, but instead of size I do it with knitting mistakes.
“You messed up back there, shouldn’t you go back and fix it?”
“No… I’ll just hack it together on the next row to get back on track”
“Okay that made it worse. Are you SURE you don’t want to go back and fix it?”
“Now it’s too late. If I just keep going, it will even itself out.”

    • I have to say, it’s almost impossible for me to go back and fix a mistake. Even in a lace pattern where it’s really screwing me up. It can be a problem! But ripping back is just so sad..
