All owls all the time.

Today I am going to tell you a story. It’s a story that has been a long time in the making, and about which I have been uncharacteristically mum. I did offer one tiny sneak peek of this enormous project, but that was MONTHS ago, and since then I’ve been quite mouselike in my silence about this scheme.
But the secrecy is no longer necessary! Bwahahahaha!
Anyway, here’s the story. My boss is a really amazingly nice lady, and she and her husband decided a few years ago that they were ready to have a baby. Unfortunately, the universe decided that it wasn’t time yet. However, a few months ago, they found out that they were going to have a baby! Of course, much excitement and glee ensued, and I decided that this baby needed something extra special to welcome it into the world. So I went a little crazy.
They had decided that they wanted the gender of the baby to be a surprise, hence the cream. I had discovered these adorable cabled owls a while ago, and had been dying for a chance to use them, so I decided that the baby set was going to be owl themed. AND NO ONE WOULD STAND IN MY WAY. And after knitting I think about 35 of these little owls, I can safely say that they do not lose their charm after many repetitions. I am ENCHANTED by how this wonderfully simple cable pattern turns into a perfect little owl EVERY TIME. I want to put owls all over everything. Owl blanket? Yes please. Owl scarf? Thank you sir, may I have another? Seriously, I am going crazy about these owls, and I am so ready for that baby to get borned already so it can WEAR ALL THE OWLS.

You will admire my forethought, (well, I was proud of myself for thinking of it.) because the booties, hat, and sleep sack are all sized so that the baby can use them right away. However, the set is in a pretty nice warm wool, and winter is almost over here in ‘ol Beantown. That is clearly not enough time for the little baby to go around decked out in owl gear. SO, the sweater is actually the 1 year old size, so hopefully he/she/it can get an entire season’s wear out of the sweater. Maximum cuteness shall be achieved. I am so ridiculously proud of myself for finishing all this stuff (despite the fact that it’s sized for a baby, and TINY. And I’ve been working on it for ~6 months.) that I want to show all of you!
The pattern for the sweater is Owlet in the 1 year old size, and if you have a Ravelry account and haven’t seen this one, you can color me shocked. One really nice thing about this pattern is that it gives a huge range of sizes, so basically if you have a kid, they can have an owl sweater regardless of age. Also, it’s very well written and clear. Yay!
The pattern for the sleep sack is here, and the hat is here. They are both done by the same designer, which means that the construction on both of them is pretty much identical, just in different sizes. This thrills my OCD little soul, which insists that everything must match AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Even if no one is going to notice but me >.<
Finally, the booties are here. The pattern is actually called “Hooties,” which I find so cute that I can’t even handle it. Puns for the win! This pattern was so fun and cute and clever! I don’t think I’ve ever knitted baby booties before, and I couldn’t get over how quick and adorable and satisfying they were! Here they are all together!
I loved making these, and might have to look into the grownup Owl sweater for myself

I don’t think the baby will care too much about what it’s wearing, but its parents loved it!
How adorable are all the owls, what a perfect gift for a much awaited baby! I always forget to use cream as a color for babies as I tend to knit things for when they are older, and my nephews usually make cream turn into brown in no time at all!
I was a little worried about that, but I’m hoping that the baby will not be too messy when it’s still little!

I thought so too, but they were quite adamant about keeping it a surprise. Oh well, I should find out in the next few days, since she was induced yesterday!

Q – LOVE the owls. The items you knit are fabulous. I’m an owl lover too. How about knitting Hogwarts Express for the mom? LOL! It’s in my list of to-do. I have a new grandson expected in Sept, I have to knit the hat.
