I Couldn’t Help Myself

Sometimes you find wonderful things in places that you don’t expect. And while that sounds like some sort of silly motivational quote, in this case I mean it entirely literally.

I was popping into Newbury Yarns a while back, and I was caught unawares. I didn’t actually need any yarn (and their prices are fairly outrageous anyway) but what should I find hiding in one of the bins but some spinning fiber! And it was spinning fiber of rare and delicate beauty.

It was the color of fairy wings, and dewdrops on cobwebs, and the shine on a dragonfly’s back. And darlings?

It was 100% suri alpaca. I was helpless in its thrall.

  1. I haven’t started with my drop spindle yet and I would still have taken this home! It’s gorgeous :)

    • It’s spinning up to look really pretty too! I think the virulent pink calms down a bit when spun, which is good because I was starting to worry about how bright it was!

  2. Q – beautiful! Your descriptors are wonderful.

  3. Oooo! That looks yummy. So yummy I’m almost tempted to take up spinning! Suri Alpaca and gorgeous colours = heaven

    • Everyone should spin! Spinning for all!! But seriously, for an anxiety-ridden creature like myself, it relaxes me even more than knitting.

  4. Alpaca Fairy Wings! It’s very lovely. Be sure to show us what it looks like after you spin it up :)

    • Oh I will, don’t worry!!

  5. This.is.gorgeous. omg!

    • The colors are delectable! Turns out that Suri alpaca is a bear to spin (it feels like hair, totally weird) but the colors are so beautiful that I forgive it everything.

  6. no wonder you couldn’t resist- it’s beautiful, and in the winter, I totally crave alpaca, too!

    • Alpaca is too warm the rest of the time, I think, but when it’s snowing I crave incredibly warm woollies in bright and cheerful colors :)
